What qualifications do I need to become a travel nurse?

A travel nurse needs a Bachelor of Nursing degree to qualify as a registered nurse. Travel nurses also need to obtain and maintain an Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registration.

Depending on the location of the assignment, travel nurses may find it beneficial to obtain a remote area nursing qualification, particularly when working in isolated communities where specialised skills are essential for providing care.

How much do travel nurses earn?

Travel nurses are registered nurses, so they are paid under the Nurses Award. What a travel nurse earns depends on their experience, the location of the assignment and their specialism. All travel nurses are paid on a casual basis, which is a higher hourly rate with casual loading included for PM, night duty, Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday shifts.

A travel nurse in Australia will earn on average between $1,124.80 and $2496.80 per week, before tax. At Pulse Staffing, our rates vary from $50 - $120 an hour.
